The Legacy League Names Edgar Renteria as Director of Baseball Operations in Colombia, South America, and Special Assistant to The Legacy League Offices in Mississippi

The Legacy League continues to grow, announcing today that Edgar Renteria, the former Atlanta Braves shortstop (2006–2007), has joined. Known as "The Barranquilla Baby" throughout his 16-year Major League Baseball career, he made an impact that was anything but juvenile, with his value growing at every stop along the way.

In 1996, Renteria finished 2nd place in balloting for the MLB "Rookie of the Year Award" before going on to top that feat in 1997 when he hit an eleventh-inning single off pitcher Charles Nagy to win the Florida Marlins their first World Series against the Cleveland Indians. In 2006–2007, Renteria put together an impressive 24-game hitting streak—the longest to open a season since Ron LeFlore in 1976—before injuries, including a strained rib cage, sidelined him. In the 2010 World Series against the Texas Rangers, Rentería would prove himself as one of MLB's elite clutch players when he won the Willie Mays World Series Most Valuable Player Award with the San Francisco Giants after he hit game-winning home runs in Game 2 and Game 5.

In 2025, to top off his career, Renteria was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.

He's the best Colombian-born baseball player of all time, as evidenced.

Renteria says a career highlight came when he was

Awarded Colombia's highest honor, the San Carlos Cross of the Order of the Great Knight (1997)

Which was awarded by the President of Colombia

“With such an impressive career both on and off the field, I can only say that it’s an honor to have Edgar join our team of Legends in the Legacy League as we all pay homage to the Legend himself, Henry “Hank” Aaron.  It’s been my privilege and honor to spend over 15 years of my career in Colombia and I can say that there’s no other name more recognized in that beautiful Country than Edgar’s….and always with a smile and pride from those who speak of or about him – Edgar never knew the word “quit” in any language and that is why we’re privileged to have him….Welcome aboard, Edgar!  We’ve got some great times ahead of us.” –

Tim Bennett, Legacy League – Commissioner

Edgar's role and title will be as the Director of Baseball Operations in Colombia, South America, and Special Assistant to the Legacy League Office in Mississippi, helping to guide the developmental League and aid in promoting players from all backgrounds, both on and off the field.

As baseball continues to grow in Colombia, South America, amid the love the country has for football (North American Soccer), Edgar says he hopes that his impact can be to help the League to develop players on both sides of the water and continue to produce opportunities for Colombia's youth to participate and contribute to a healthy society through what is known as "America's Favorite Pastime," and a game loved by many all over the world.

In all, Renteria retired as a 5(x) MLB All-Star, took home 2 MLB World Series, namely with the Florida Marlins in 1997 and with the San Francisco Giants in 2010, and won the Willie Mays World Series MVP Award. He was a (2x) Golden Glove Award winner and a (3x) National League Silver Slugger Award winner for shortstop.

The Order of San Carlos is a state order granted by Colombia. The order was founded on August 16th, 1954, to honor Colombian citizens and foreign civilians and military officers who have made outstanding contributions to Colombia, especially in international relations.
