Baseball and Bennett in Mississippi have been synonymous for decades beginning with his role in the relocation of the Atlanta Braves (AA) Minor League Club, the Mississippi Braves to a newly built Trustmark Park in 2005; being the Co-Owner and V.P. of the Milwaukee Brewers (AA) Minor League Club, the Biloxi Shuckers who played at newly constructed MGM Park in 2015 and in 2021 becoming a partner to bring the Hank Aaron Sports Academy to Jackson, Mississippi’s Smith Wills Stadium.
Bennett, however, stated that “Not one of these accomplishments could ever have been possible had I not had a great team of support around me. It was always the team that won the game, and this time is no different. Professor Croft at the University of Southern Mississippi and his 32+ students (interns) have been such an integral part of what we’ve been building with the Legacy League, and I wanted to make sure to thank every one of those students and the Professor for helping us build this program – giving Mississippi something to call its own….the work’s not over and we’ve got a ways to go before we cross the finish line in late-May this year, but without this team, we simply wouldn’t be here.”
The name of the team's contest concluded on April 9th at 5:00 pm, with team names collected from citizens, teachers, city leaders, baseball fans, and even some interested persons from abroad, all leading to the unveiling of the 6 final names. After revealing the team names associated with each Legacy League city, the next steps will include:
